Michael McMahon BSc, MSc, PG Dip is a highly skilled MSK Advanced Practice Physiotherapist & MSK Sonographer with extensive experience across the NHS, Private Practice and multi-sports settings. He is one of the select few nationally to have undertaken a PG Diploma in Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography combining qualifications in Diagnostic Ultrasound & US Guided Injection Therapy obtained through the University of East London. Michael developed his ultrasound scanning skills working alongside Peter Resteghini, Consultant Physiotherapist and Musculoskeletal Sonographer at the Homerton University Hospital. He has also worked alongside leading shoulder specialists such as Anju Jaggi and Andre LeLeu in private practice in London. Michael has worked for the English Institute of Sport with Olympic and Paralympic athletes. He has worked in contact sports such as rugby, Gaelic football and for many years in premiership football for Brentford F.C. and Tottenham Hotspur F.C. |
Qualifications
Michael is a highly experienced Musculoskeletal Sonographer as well as an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist. That means he is able to uniquely combine expert musculoskeletal assessment skills along with diagnostic ultrasound assessment to confirm the diagnosis of your condition and perform ultrasound guided injections where appropriate.
Following completion of his BSc Hons Physiotherapy in 2005, Michael has undertaken extensive post graduate training including in Injection Therapy in 2014, an MSc in Advanced Practice Physiotherapy in 2017 and a Post Graduate Diploma in MSK Ultrasound in 2021.
He is registered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Health and Care Professions Council.
Work
Michael now works predominantly in a Central London teaching hospital with complex NHS cases and provide expert second opinion on further management options. He is their MSK Injection therapy and Ultrasound lead undertaking over 300 injections per year. He is the Clinical and Operational lead of their NHS Sports Injury Clinic.
He also works in a soft tissue Orthopaedic knee clinic alongside the Lead Consultant Knee Surgeon Mr James Bliss.
Teaching & Research
Michael leads the South East London MSK Ultrasound Clinical Group. He has taught nationally and internationally on ultrasound scanning and guided injections and published research on his injection therapy clinical practice as below:
- An evaluation of the outcomes of corticosteroid injections in a musculoskeletal clinic during COVID-19
- Characteristics of patients attending for MSK corticosteroid injections in an NHS setting
